Conjunctions คือ คำที่ใช้เชื่อม วลี หรือประโยคตั้งแต่ 2 หน่วยขึ้นไปเข้าด้วยกัน แบ่งเป็น 3 ประเภท ได้แก่

1. Coordinate conjunctions คือ conjunctions ที่เชื่อม clause แล้วทำให้เกิด main clause (ประโยคอิสระ) ขึ้นทั้งคู่ ได้แก่ and, but, or และ so
2. Subordinate conjunctions คือ conjunctions ที่เชื่อม clause แล้วทำให้เกิด clause ที่มี conjunctions นำหน้ากลายเป็น subordinate clause (ประโยคไม่อิสระ) ได้แก่ that, if, because, since, for, although, whether และพวก wh-questions (who, whom, which, whose, what, where, when, why, how)
3. Correlate conjunctions คือ conjunctions ที่ใช้เป็นคู่ ได้แก่

          Not only .......... but also
          Either .......... or
          Neither .......... and
          Both .......... and
          Whether .......... or

Examples :
          __________ did he feel lonely, but he also feared ghosts.

          (C) Not only                (D) Without them

          เฉลย ข้อ C คือคำตอบที่ถูกต้อง เพราะ Not only คู่กับ but also

       
          John loves Jill __________ she loves David.
          (A) so                         (B) but
          (C) because                (D) and

          เฉลย clasuse คู่นี้น่าจะมีความหมายขัดแย้งกัน ตัวเชื่อม but ในข้อ B จึงเหมาะสมที่สุด
