Prepositions มักเป็นคำที่บอกความสัมพันธ์ของทิศทาง ที่ตั้ง เวลา วิธีการ ฯลฯ ระหว่างคำนามกับคำอื่นๆ ในข้อความ

          บางครั้ง prepositions ใช้ควบคู่กับคำกริยาบางคำ ที่เรียกว่า Phrasal verb เช่น depend on, deal with, believe in, base on หรือกับสำนวนโครงสร้างบางรูป เช่น in addition to, according to, together with, instead of

          Prepositions แบ่งได้เป็นหลายประเภท ดังนี้

Prepositions บอกเวลา
          in บอก เดือน ปี ฤดูกาล ศตวรรษ (in July, in 1998, in the rainy season)
          on บอก วัน วันที่ (on Wednesday, on the fourth of July)
          at บอก จุดหนึี่งของเวลา (at two o'clock, at night, at dusk)
          during ระหว่าง (during the whole day)
          for ระยะเวลา ( for many years, for three weeks)
          since ตั้งแต่ บอกจดหนึ่งของเวลา (since yesterday, since 1996)
          until จนกว่า จนกระทั่ง (until his arrival, until June)
          within ภายในเวลา (within a month)
          from ..... to จาก ..... ถึง บอกจุดเริ่มและสิ้นสุด (from Monday to Sunday)

Preposition บอกความขัดแย้ง หรือไม่สมเหตุสมผล
          after (in spite of, notwithstanding) ทั้ง ๆ ที่ แม้ว่า
          Notwithstanding every effort, one may fail. ทั้งๆที่พยายามทุกวิถีทางแล้ว คนเราก็ยังอาจล้มเหลวได้
          for, with (in spite of) ทั้ง ๆ ที่ แม้ว่า
          For all his wealth he is not content. ถึงแม้จะร่ำรวย แต่เขาก็ยังไม่พอใจ
          With all his faults I admire him. ฉันชื่นชมเขา ทั้งๆที่เขาเคยทำผิดมามากมาย
